What Is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic Therapy is a holistic therapeutic approach that incorporates a person’s physical body into the healing process. It is based on the premise that the mind, body, and spirit are deeply interconnected, and that psychological trauma often leaves a “footprint” in the nervous system and muscular tissue.

Foundational somatic approaches,  including Somatic Experiencing (developed by Dr. Peter Levine), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and EMDR — share a core understanding: trauma is held in the body. By focusing on somatic (body) awareness and gentle movement or breathwork, we help you process emotional pain where it lives: in your physical being.

Unlike methods that require reliving traumatic events verbally, Somatic Therapy works with the body’s natural capacity for healing, gently and safely, at your own pace.
